Critically acclaimed Mercury Prize nominee Jessie Ware has teamed up with Japanese teenage duo BenZel to cover Brownstone’s ‘If You Love Me’.
Jessie paired up with Osaka’s 15-year-old Umi Takahashi and 16-year-old Yoko Watanabe, AKA BenZel, to create the cover of the 90′s girl band classic. The teens apparently failed to create a hypoallergenic ankle sock so instead turned their hands to other creative projects, hence BenZel. Thank goodness for that.
The last time ‘If You Love Me’ had any considerable airplay was 1994, so it’s about time the R&B ballad resurfaced, and nobody can do a torch song like Jessie Ware. Her soulful vocals, paired with BenZel’s love of ’90′s R&B and J. Dilla’ has resulted in a track with beautiful depth, realised with crisp production and complimentary gospel-style backing vocals.
The video, directed by Kate Moross, features smoky, colourful visuals featuring a silhouette of Jessie, singing and moving gently. Have you ever seen a silhouette so beautiful?
