GIRL, MAKE IT YOURSELF: DIY FASHION

Aoife Dunne - HOWL Magazine

I’ve never been a fan of matching anything.

Most of my wardrobe consists of clashing colours, patterns, textures, styles and fabrics, and it’s mostly all vintage. I love vintage clothing, not only because of the amazing value and the fact that I’m literally swiped (hire me), but because I love searching through heaps of one-off pieces from way back when. For me, clothes are an expression of your character and I think what you wear and how you present yourself should convey who you are and what you love.

This would be a typical outfit for me: a complete mixture of everything. My platform Converse (eBay bargain) were the start of my addiction to anything platform – from my creepers to my on-the-way red Buffalo babies.

I always think a tie-dye baggy graphic tee is a great option for literally anything, and if you’re like me and like to get DIY with your clothes, just spend a few quid on some dyes, fill up your bath and get going.

My classic studded neck collar – which was also made pon de DIY – might as well be gunned to me; I never leave the house without it, along with my sketch pad and my house keys. Actually that’s a blatant lie – I’m always locked out, eating cold chips on the doorstep at six in the morning: it’s like an on-going habit of mine forgetting my keys!

The army camouflage gem I bought in Urban Outfitters not long ago I just throw it on with anything: it’s a keeper! I’m sorry for all you loaded chicas with no time and an actual job because this outfit is just all DIY. In fact my whole wardrobe is just DIY, partially because I’m always re-inventing my style and there’s also the fact that I can never find anything exactly the way I picture it. Or maybe that’s just a nice way of saying “I have no life and I like how dangerous I feel with a stud gun”.

Rolling on with some more “Do It Yourfuckingself” to go with this look, get two pairs of tights, cut one leg off one, one off the other and sew them together and BAM. I always think the double-coloured tights look great with cool, fruity-patterned socks. The ones in my collage are from Lazy Oaf, you can never have enough!

So my outfit this week is: platform sneakers; double-coloured tights with crazy-ass patterned socks; cool dyed baggy tee; throwing on an army jacket; IRL LND ‘nope’ hat with my headscarf tied underneath and the ends twisted in my newly-dyed turquoise hair and then just accessorise it up – the bulkier the better.

You can find loads of other stuff I love, including DIY makes and tie-dye, on the HOWL Women’s Fashion Pinterest board.
