Cinemetrics. No, it’s not some new kind of mental conditioning cooked up by Scientologists.
Cinemetrics is the brainchild of Frederic Brodbeck, a student from the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK), Den Haag. He says that ‘Cinemetrics is about measuring and visualizing movie data, in order to reveal the characteristics of films and to create a visual “fingerprint” for them.’
Just like human fingerprints, Cinemetrics are unique to the film they belong to. They are made up from the colour palette of scenes spanning the entire film, and move in accordance with the amount of movement in the film. Cinemetrics are pretty beautiful to comprehend, and Brodbeck does a good job of illustrating this in the video above. Enjoy.
